Mid Engine Corvette C8
After years of conjecture, whispered plans, and attempted renderings, a mid-engine version of America’s favorite sports car, the Chevy Corvette, is finally in production. Chevy has officially acknowledged that the mid-engine Corvette is both real and coming to a town near you sometime late 2019/early 2020! That means we will have it on our lot here at Powers Swain Chevrolet. Depending on when you’re reading this, it may be sitting here waiting for you to take it for a test drive! Contact our team here for more information, or read on below for details about what makes this model so special!
So what exactly is a “mid-engine” layout? Instead of the engine being in front of the cabin, per usual, this innovative car will feature a behind the cabin engine. Since the layout is very non-traditional, this will give the Corvette a very different look and proportions than we're used to. However, it does keep some of those trademark styling details that we’ve come to associate with the Chevy Corvette. The low line of the roof and windshield look extremely Corvette, for example, as do the quintessential quad tail lights.
Why did Chevy move the Corvette Engine?
Ok, they moved the engine, but why? Performance baby! The only reason to make such a drastic move on a classic already high-performing car like the Chevy Corvette would be to enhance its performance. Luckily, GM has some of the best engineers on the planet (we’re a little biased). Their mid-engine innovation allows better weight distribution, much more aggressive gripping abilities, and tight corner holding that the traditional front-mid-engine can’t compete with.
It might compete with a Ferrari in performance now, but one of the reasons we love the Corvette is that it’s a more affordable sports car option. Does this mean the prices are going to skyrocket too? We’ve got great news - rumors are that the base level C8 will start in the $60-70k range. The base level is also going to be powered by a 6.2 liter, V-8 delivering a 50 horsepower gain over the current Corvette LT1, at an astounding 500 horsepower. The only transmission out the gate will be a seven speed dual-clutch automatic with paddle-shifting available.
